Historic and Cultural Interpretation with
Lawrence R Greene

Lawrence is a historic and natural interpreter. Former Lead Naturalist at The Wilds and Highlands Nature Sanctuary, he has 20 years of experience leading hikes and nature-based programs. Lawrence is also the founder and lead drummer for Ugata: drum and dance, an Artsbridge catalog artist, and founding member of The Friends of the Plains Mounds. We are pleased to help coordinate the following two experiences for your group with Rising Appalachia co-founder, Lawrence Greene.

Mingo Medicine Trail Hikes

The Mingo medicine trail was constructed by Lawrence Greene and his apprentices during a US Forest Service grant-funded program as a way to preserve and share this endangered Iroquoian language native to the areas of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia. He worked closely with the Mingo remnant band of Ohio on this trail to create signs and an interpretive program explaining the Indigenous words and pronunciations for common native trees and natural phenomena found along the trail.

The trail descends from the hilltop through a mature Southeastern forest full of oaks, hickories as well as beech and maple. The “Nook” is a seating area on the trail with several Mingo language signs and gives the hikers a chance to sit before heading down to the bridge and over the creek. Along with seeing the flora and fauna along the trail, we will also explore some of the local history.  The trail drops down a small hill across the second bridge to the “Ruins”, as we call the abandoned coal mining site. Hikers will walk back up a hill to complete the loop and return to the trailhead.

The cost is $75 for up to two hours of programming and discussion, but the approximately 1-mile hike can be completed in under an hour if desired. An additional fee of $5 per person above 10 participants will be charged.

Wolf Plains Mounds Van Tour

The Wolf Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures located in The Plains, Ohio (originally known as Wolf's Plains) a few miles to the northwest of Athens on a relatively flat terrace in an area of otherwise hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio's Hocking River Valley.

This is the third largest Adena mound complex after Chillicothe and Charleston, WV.  Only three mounds remain visible in The Plains. The tour will take us through the area that used to be inhabited by mounds with an explanation of Ohio prehistory using the original maps of the area, including a look at the mound excavation records. We will stop at the Plains for bathroom breaks and a look at the “schoolhouse” mound that now has a home on top of it. Next, we will stop at the parking lot near the High school and walk over to a mound that is on private property. Finally, We will visit the two largest remaining mounds off of Mounds St. before returning to Solid Ground Farm. This tour helps to support Native culture and heritage in Ohio and Athens County.

The cost for the guided van tour is $150. The van can accommodate up to 14 passengers and will take approximately 2 hours.
