Spring Wildflower Hike
May 1st, 5-7 pm
Join Lawrence Greene on a moderate hike along the The Mingo medicine trail at Solid Ground Farm Some of the trail signs have been labeled with the Mingo language, an Iroquoian language native to the areas of western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia.
We will descend through a mature Southeastern Forest full of life and wildflowers. Along with seeing the flora and fauna on the trail, we will also be talking about some of the local history, including coal mining history as we explore the "Ruins" of that era, noting how Mother Nature has reclaimed the Land.
Field Grafting Fruit & Nut Trees
Friday, May 9th 12:30 to 2:30 PM
High-quality fruit and nut cultivars can be grafted onto wild trees of the same or closely related species currently growing in your yard to make an instant orchard. Learn how we convert wild pawpaws, persimmons, mulberries, oaks, Bradford pears, apples, walnuts, and other species into site-adapted high-quality food-producing trees. Topics covered include graft compatibility, techniques, tool use, timing, and care.
Spring Yoga Retreat
Saturday, May 10th 9-5
We hope you can join us for a day together in nature to celebrate the webs of connection that weave the spaces between us. In gathering together to move our bodies, to breathe in the fresh Spring air, to write from interconnectivity, we hope to share in practices and tools for shared well being. We’ll explore becoming closer inhabitants of a place, community, and ourselves through movement, plants and other living beings, writing, food, music, dance, creativity, reflection, and just being.

Wolfe Plains Mounds Tour
Sunday, May 25th 1-3
The Wolfe Plains Group is a Late Adena culture group of 30 earthworks including 22 conical mounds and nine circular enclosures, originally known as Wolf's Plains, located a few miles to the northwest of Athens, is a relatively flat terrace in an area of hilly terrain in southeastern Ohio's Hocking River valley.
We will meet at Solid Ground Farm a few miles away from The Plains to load the Rising Appalachia van. This is the third largest Adena mound complex after Chillicothe and Charleston, WV. Only three mounds remain visible in The Plains. We have the records of the mound excavations to be able to tell you what was found inside of them. The tour will take us through the area that used to be inhabited by mounds with an explanation of Ohio prehistory using the original maps of the area. We will stop at the Plains for bathroom breaks and a look at the “schoolhouse” mound that now has a home on top of it. Next, we will stop at the parking lot near the High school and walk over to a mound that is on private property near the Nature Conservancy land in The Plains. Finally, We will visit the two largest remaining mounds off of Mounds St before returning to Solid Ground Farm. This tour helps to support Native culture and heritage in Ohio and Athens County.
