2019 Registration is Open
Rising Appalachia became a 501(c)(3) non profit in 2016 with the purpose of providing charitable community services for Athens and surrounding counties. It currently operates a summer day camp and hosts festivals, events, and workshops with a focus on the environment and sustainability. Through education, demonstration, and community exchange, Rising Appalachia supports a regional culture based on sustainable natural resources providing for economic activity, collective needs, and individual health and enjoyment.
What's New in 2019?
2018 was an awesome summer, but even back in late August the sights were set on improving the experience and offerings for the year 2019. Rising Appalachia has some big plans in the works! See below for some of what to expect.
Dates and Age Ranges
Local High Schools are moving their schedules forward, and to adapt RAW Camps are also seeing a shift in their scheduling. To see the list of dates and rates, take a peek at the table at the top of our Camp Offerings page. You can sort the table by dates and age groups.
Additionally, because of high demand we saw that some of our camps for younger campers were selling out to older children. To mitigate this and to ensure that our programs are specific to the age ranges present as indicated by parent surveys and feedback, we are trimming down the age ranges for camps from 6-12 and 8-17 to 6-10 and 8-12 with more 12-17 offerings both on and off camp.
Trips and Expeditions
Right now, Rising Appalachia is tentatively looking to offer trips and expeditions for our older campers. Possible expeditions include heading to West Virginia to canoe the Greenbriar River, or even staying closer to home and exploring nearby Wayne National on mountain bikes. We are also looking to offer a female only trip for older campers interested in our Women of RAW program. Stay tuned if your 12 and up camper might be interested in taking RAW off camp for some next level overnight adventure. For a sneak peek at our tentative plans for 2019, check out our Trips and Expeditions page.
We are hoping that Trips and Expeditions will be able to open up year round programming for 2019, exposing local children and families to the incredible natural resources around us.
Rising Appalachia's CIT program is receiving a huge overhaul this year. We are looking to take our veteran campers and give them true leadership training and empower them to take on the task of paying the RAW experience forward. As in the past, CITs will come from the RAW Leaders camp pool which is selective process, and then will be eligible to come out as a CIT free of charge for weeks of camp with younger campers. For more information, check out the RAW Leaders and CIT descriptions on the Camp Offerings page.
